Food Safety Comments filed with FDA
On Tuesday, February 23, 2010, the Food and Drug Administration published Docket No. FDA-2010-N-0085, requesting input from industry on how a produce food safety regulation should be structured. Specifically, the publication asked for “comments that will inform the development of Safety standards for fresh produce at the farm and packing house”. FDA participated in a number of produce food safety workshops around the country, announcing their intention to publish their produce food safety regulation in early 2011. The Indian River Citrus League and Florida Citrus Packers jointly filed comments on this issue on July 21, 2010. These comments, are in many ways, the basis for “Commodity Specific Good Agricultural Practices for Florida Citrus”, also posted on this site.
Food Safety Good Agricultural Practices (FSGAPs)
Indian River Citrus League and Florida Citrus Packers jointly developed industry guidance for the development of FSGAPs by growers and packers. This set of working papers is a live document and will be improved over time. The document is divided into three parts, including fundamental principles, resource materials, supporting documentation, sample plans and checklists. This document was developed for the fresh Florida citrus sector, but in consideration of the needs to the entire Florida citrus industry. Comments and suggestions are welcomed.
This document was unanimously endorsed by the Indian River Citrus League and Florida Citrus Packers boards of directors in October 2010.
